Hobby Clubs

Hobby clubs are open to boys and girls in grades 5-12 who are members of the Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade!  They meet in addition to regular Building Leaders program nights. Regular attendance is expected if you choose to join a hobby club.

  • To register, Brigaders must attend the first meeting night and bring fees. There is no pre-registration for clubs prior to the first meeting. Brigaders can register after the first meeting night if space allows.
  • If Brigade is cancelled due to weather, hobby clubs will also be cancelled.
  • Non-Brigaders may be eligible to join hobby clubs starting Oct. 24 if there are spots available. Fees for non-Brigaders are double the Brigader fee.

2016-2017 Brigade year Hobby Clubs

Archery Club

Brigader Fee: $15

Open to all skill levels. You can expect normal target archery with a few new wrinkles added every week. Try a 3D target or a different shooting position and learn maintenance and repair tips and practices. Hone your technique whether you are a beginner or advanced archer.

Meets from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on the following Wednesdays in the archery range: Oct 12, 19, 26; Nov 2, 9, 16; Jan 4, 11, 18, 25; Feb 1, 8, 15, 22; March 1, 8, 15

 

Ceramics Club

Brigader Fee: $20

Learn to clean, glaze, paint and fire Greenware. Participants will need to purchase some paint brushes and supplies. Parents of Brigaders are also welcome. Limited to 12 participants.

Meets from 7-9 p.m. on the following Wednesdays in the 3rd floor ceramics room: Oct 12, 19, 26; Nov 2, 9, 16, 30; Dec 7, 14; Jan 4, 11, 18, 25; Feb 1, 8, 15, 22; March 1, 8, 15, 22

 

CLIMBING CLUB

Brigader Fee: $10

The climbing club will focus on safe climbing, climbing techniques, and having fun. All participants under 18 must have a release form signed by parent/guardian on file. Parents and guests welcome! Participants younger than 5th grade are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent.

Meets from 5-7 p.m. on different days each week to accommodate all grades and schedules. Watch the monthly Brigade calendar for the current month’s climbing dates.

 

Cooking Club "In the Kitchen with Moose" (FULL)

Brigader Fee: $20

Each week we will be cooking and eating, but the point of the hobby club is to learn sanitary, healthy cooking techniques and recipes that you can make for your families. Each week you will go home with the recipe for the items that we made for the week. You are encouraged to share what you have learned with your families by cooking for them. Limited to 10 participants and available only to active Brigaders.

You will be provided with an apron, you MUST bring it with you every week. No apron, no cooking. It is your responsibility to wash it and have it each week. A hat of your own is also required. It needs to effectively restrain your hair. Safety kitchen practices must be followed at all times, anyone who is behaving in an unsafe manner will be warned, and if the action persists, they will be removed from the club.

Spring session meets from 5-6:45 p.m. on the following Wednesdays in the 2nd floor kitchen:

  • February 8 -Vegetarian Jambalaya w/ Corn Bread, Dessert: Butterscotch Cookies
  • February 15 - Stuffed Peppers w/ Roasted Vegetables, Dessert: Choc Chip Cookies
  • February 22 - Tacos w/ Spanish Rice, Dessert: Funky Monkey Cookies
  • March 1 - Mac & Cheese w/ Fried Chicken Tenders, Dessert: Peanut Butter Cookies
  • March 8 - Sloppy Joes w/ Spinach/Pine Nut Pasta Salad, Dessert: Snickerdoodle Cookies
  • March 15 - Turkey Soup & BLTs, Dessert: Rice Crispy Drop Cookies
  • March 22 - Beef Stroganoff w/ Egg Noodles, & Roasted Brussel Sprouts, Dessert: Oatmeal Cookies
  • April 5 - Members Choice (Decided on March 15th)

 

DRILL & DRUM CORPS

Brigader Fee: $10

Serve as the official Honor Guard of the Brigade, performing at important events including Awards Programs and the Memorial Day Parade on May 27. All sections learn and refine marching skills, and the drum section will also learn drum cadence for presentation and parade. See website calendar for meeting dates and times.

 

Entrepreneur Club

Brigader Fee $5

Ever wanted to start your own business? Learn from leaders who have started their own and want you to learn how.  Source product, price, marketing and more. First project is making caramel corn.

Meets from 6:30-7:30 p.m. the following Wednesdays: Oct 19, 26; Nov 2, 9, 16, 30; Dec 7, 14; Jan 4, 11, 18, 25; Feb 1, 8, 15, 22; March 1, 8, 15, 22

 

KARATE CLUB

Brigader Fee $10

Karate is good exercise, it’s fun, it enhances your confidence, teaches you methods to defend yourself, develops patience, and more! Kids will have the opportunity to test and earn belts. Brigaders who register for this club should plan on attending at least one day per week.

Meets from 5-6:15 p.m. on the following Mondays: Oct 10, 17, 24, 31; Nov 7, 14, 28; Dec 5, 12; Jan 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; Feb 6, 13, 20, 27; March 6, 13, 20

MODEL RAILROAD CLUB

Brigader Fee: $10

Help design and build the HO scale model railroad layout.  Lay track, create scenery, construct models and operate trains.

Meets from 7-9 p.m. on the following Tuesdays in the 3rd floor Model RR room: Oct 11, 18, 25; Nov 1, 8, 15, 29; Dec 6, 13; Jan 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; Feb 7, 14, 21, 28; March 7, 14, 21

 

RIFLE CLUB

Brigader Fee: $20 (Covers ammunition, targets, rifle use)

Learn and develop your shooting skills. Taught by NRA qualified instructors. Limited to 12 participants. Brigaders should plan on signing up for one of the two sessions.

Session #1 - Meets from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays in the basement rifle range: Oct 11, 18, 25; Nov 1, 8, 15, 29; Dec 6, 13; Jan 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; Feb 7, 14, 21, 28; March 7, 14, 21

Session #2 - Meets from 7-8 p.m. on the following Wednesdays in the basement rifle range: Oct 12, 19, 26; Nov 2, 9, 16, 30; Dec 7, 14; Jan 4, 11, 18, 25; Feb 1, 8, 15, 22; March 1, 8, 15, 22

 

RUNNING CLUB

Current Brigaders with some previous running experience who wish to become more competitive by improving speed and endurance are invited to join! Runs are Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. (4 miles), Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. (3 miles or speedwork) and Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. (runs ranging from 4 to 8 miles) with the start at end meeting points at Brigade. Brigaders can also participate in various optional race events throughout the year (may require entry fees).

 

Small Engine Repair Club

Brigader Fee: $10

Open to 7th graders and above. Learn repair and maintenance of internal combustion engines such as lawn mowers, snow blowers, go-carts and small outboards. Limited to 5 participants.

Meets from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on the following Mondays in the basement engine mechanics room: Oct 10, 17, 24, 31; Nov 7, 14, 28; Dec 5, 12; Jan 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; Feb 6, 13, 20, 27; March 6, 13, 20

 

Welding Club

Brigader Fee: $15

Interested in learning to weld? Already welded a few times and would like to enhance your skills? Learn to weld with some of the finest welding equipment in the industry (using Miller Electric Equipment). We will learn the basics welding principles, progress to stick welding and then move on to MIG (wire) welding. If time permits, we'll get to TIG welding. Limited to 6-8 participants.

For the second half of the year, meetings will take place from 5-6:45 p.m. on the first, third and fourth Thursdays of the month in the basement metal shop: Jan 26; Feb 2, 16, 23; March 2, 16, 23

 

Ski Club (FULL)

More info available in late November. Discounted group lift rates available.

The Ski Club schedules four evening trips to Nordic Mountain in Mt. Morris, Wisconsin. Participants will need their own equipment or will need to rent equipment, which Brigade facilitates at a discounted group rate. Trips are chaperoned by experienced Brigade volunteers who are capable skiers and snowboarders willing to share their expertise. Professional instruction is also available through the various ski hills.

 

STEAM Club
(SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART, MATH) 

Brigader Fee $5

Brigade has a pile of new gadgets begging to be used, and a crew of nerdy leaders excited to build cool stuff! We're ready to launch rockets, program robots, build solar power systems, or whatever world changing invention you can dream up.

Meets from 6-7 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: Oct 11, 18, 25; Nov 1, 8, 15, 29; Dec 6, 13; Jan 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; Feb 7, 14, 21, 28; March 7, 14, 21.  Dates/times may change based on current projects.
