Tom Hoare Earns Shattuck Award from Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade

The Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade of Neenah, Wisconsin, has selected Thomas Hoare to receive the highest award given by the organization, the S.F. Shattuck Award.  The award is given to individuals that exhibit noble character, actively serve the community, and demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities. 

The award was presented by Bill Bergstrom, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, and John Dery, Executive Director of the Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade at the annual Volunteer Appreciation dinner.  Tom Hoare is past Executive Director of the Brigade and is an active volunteer, devoting tremendous amounts of time toward the Christmas Giving program.  Tom also assists in other volunteer roles at the Brigade and is an active member of the Neenah Rotary. 

John Dery commented, “Tom Hoare exemplifies outstanding leadership qualities and devotes countless hours of service to the Brigade and the community.  Tom’s tireless devotion and leadership qualities make him very deserving of this award.” 

Since 1964 the Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade has been recognizing volunteer leaders to receive this award.  Former award recipients include:  S.F. Shattuck, Leo Schubart, Dave Jones, Howard Angermeyer, Stanley Severson, Emery Rickard, Karl Oberreich, Jack Casper, Donald Fiedler, Jack Neubauer, Don Weber, Andrew (Bud) DeLeeuw, Kathy Fiedler, Carlton Hoppe, James Lenz, Richard Zeumer, Robert Erdmann, Nate Wauda, Russ Carpenter, and Pat Weber. 

Also recognized for years of service at the Volunteer Appreciation dinner were:  Jim Hawley for 45 years of service; Gerry Marks for 35 years; Lee Murray, Gary Ramich, and Bruce Wiegman for 30 years; Pam Buss, Keith Carpenter, Lyle Hemp, Laura Mueller, and David Pheifer for 25 years; Steve Nickolas and Ed Palmer for 20 years; Mark Apitz, Fred Block, Steve Foster, Paul Linzmeyer, James Scovronski, Jesse Stumpf, John Weyenberg, Jim Willis, and Kurt Wismer for 15 years; Bob Babbitts, Lori Borchardt, Tracey Cochran, John Groff, Lee Hendries, Chris Machamer, Russ Moder, Scott Spanbauer, and Gary Swanson for 10 years. 

The Brigade mission is: We Build Leaders. Character development and leadership programs are offered for sixth through twelfth grade youth at the Brigade building located at 109 W. Columbian Avenue in Neenah, Wisconsin.  Summer camp experiences are offered at Onaway Island in Waupaca, Wisconsin.  Youth are served by hundreds of adult volunteer leaders.  For more information on how to join or become a volunteer visit Brigade’s website at www.bgbrigade.com or call (920) 725-3983.
